Basilius Besler 'Hortus Eystettensis' 1613

Basilius Besler 1561-1629

A well known botanist and apothecary of his time when herbal medicine was incredibly important. In 1611 he was employed by the Bishop - Prince to document his garden in Bavaria which was the first of its kind. It was in fact the first botanical garden in Germany and the only one at the time outside Italy. Besler spent the next 16 years recording each flower to create ‘Hortus Eystettensis’ a celebration of botanicals. As the legendary 18th Century Carl Linnaeus described it:

‘The finest treasures of botanical literature, incomparable work’
