Signed by artist and dated 1920 Lower right.

Dimensions unframed: 41cm x 30cm

An important British painter, art teacher and Museum Director who also served in both WWI and WWII. He first studied under Stanhope Forbes and Walter Sickert and then went on as a pupil at The Slade School of Art. Later he found himself teaching at the Slade and it was then that he met his painter/sculpter wife Edith Grace Wheatley. They married and then moved to S. Africa where he held appointments as Director at The National Gallery of S. Africa and later Director of Sheffield City Art Galleries to then be curator at the National Gallery from 1948 to 1950.
