Jospeh Oppenheimer 1876-1966
A child prodigy, already a respected portrait painter by the age of 20. At 13 yrs of age he sketched Chancellor Bismark which was highly acclaimed at the time. Oppenheimer studied in Munich and Rome, as a Jew he fled Germany and came to London where he had a studio in the Pheasantry on the Kings Road, London. He was a frequent exhibitor at The Royal Academy and was friends of Whistler and Sargent often being found in the Chelsea Arts Club. His portraits included those of Chancellor Bismark, Albert Einstein, Harold Macmillan and many more.
This Still Life is typical of his style which developed from academic realism to ‘vibrating’ Impressionism.
