Born in Dublin, Ireland.  In 1950 he was elected to the Royal Academy.  Between 1940 and 1949 he exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy and in 1928 had his first one man show at the Redfern Gallery. There are public collections of his works at the Tate, London, V&A Museum, National Portrait Gallery, London.
