‘Faunes et Flore D’Antibes’ published in Paris, 1960 pochoir* on watermarked Arches paper.  Executed by Daniel Jacomet in close collusion with Picasso.  The original works were created by Picasso in 1946 and are part of his ‘joie de vivre’ series of paintings.  This is a complete folio numbered 1. of a limited edition of 300 which makes them very special and collectable.  

*Pochoir: Pochoir is a French word for stencil.  This is a highly evolved and refined technique for applying water colour, gouache and other mediums through a series of stencils.  Jacomet was considered one of the great masters of this technique.

Ethelbert White was born in Isleworth, Middlesex. In 1911 studied St.John's Wood Art School under Leonard Walker, a watercolourist who also achieved much acclaim for his beautiful decorative stained glass windows. In 1911 also married Elizabeth Crofton Dodwell, always known as Betty, the couple shared a liking for a simple and unconventional way of life, full of fun, friendship, music and travel. Lived in a little 18th century cottage in Hampstead Grove, Camden. Travelled around countryside in their gypsy caravan 'Reading', Ethelbert producing paintings of village life and Betty playing the lute. The couple became very popular and attracted social gatherings. Befriended Mark Gertler and C.R.W.Nevinson. White exhibited at London Group and New English Arts Club from 1916. First one man show at Paterson and Carfax Gallery in 1921. Was a regular exhibitor at the RA and RWS. Memorial exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 1979. His work is represented in many public collections.

Paul John Davies-Cooke was born 14th November 1916. He attended Shrewsbury School from 1930 to 1935, going on to study at Trinity College Cambridge.

He joined 610 Squadron Auxiliary Air Force in 1937 and was commissioned in July.

In August 1940 Davies-Cooke volunteered to serve in Fighter Command. He arrived a 7 OTU Hawarden on 22nd August and after converting to Spitfires rejoined 610 Squadron at Beggin Hill.

He was shot down by German soldiers.

A magnificent painting of a Polar Bear and cub in its natural environment, the vast and dramatic wilderness of the Arctic. Pearman was known for his realistic depictions of wildlife in their natural environments in Africa and the Arctic.

Pearman was British and was an instructor and pilot in the Royal Air Force during WWII. His plane was shot down and he spent 3 years in the infamous POW camp in Germany ‘Stalag Luft’ which was later immortalised in ‘The Great Escape’. After the war he studied at Malboroug School of Art and then dedicted his life to art and specifically this genre. He exhibited regularly at The Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Society of Wildlife Artists.

About Paul Maze 'The last of the Post Impressionists' 1887 - 1979

Paul Lucien Maze (1887 - 1979).  An Anglo French painter, often known as ‘The last of the Post Impressionists’.  Maze was known for his quintessentially English themes.  During the war he met Churchill and their shared love of painting led to a lifelong friendship.  Maze became Churchill’s artistic mentor, encouraging him to develop his drawing and painting techniques.

Maze served in the First World War and it was here when he met Winston Churchill in the trenches and their shared love of painting led to a lifelong friendship, Maze becoming Churchills artistic mentor encouraging him to develop his drawing and painting techniques. During the war Maze would venture to advanced positions, often beyond the British trenches to produce accurate drawings of enemy positions.  As a result of this dangerous work Maze was unfortunately wounded three times in four years and awarded the distinguished Conduct Medal and Military Medal by the British.  He later wrote a book 'Frenchman in Khaki' which details his experiences in action and contains a foreword written by his friend Winston Churchill.

It was after WWI that Maze then immersed himself into the Parisian Art Scene his friends included Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard who had a huge impact on Maze  encouraging his use of pastels which later became his favourite medium, it was his talent with pastels which brought him global recognition.

1921 Maze and his wife moved to London where he exhibited in many major art galleries in London, America and Paris.  It was in 1939 that Maze had his first New York exhibition and in the foreword of the catalogue, Winston Churchill wrote:

"His great Knowledge of painting and draughtsmanship have enabled him to perfect this remarkable gift.  With the fewest of strokes, he can create and impression at once true and beautiful.  Here is no toiling seeker after preconceived effects, but a vivid and powerful interpreter to us of the forces and harmony of nature'"

Maze served with the British Home Guard during WWII  and then as a personal Staff Officer to Sir Arthur Harris.  Maze competed in the art competitions at the 1948 Summer Olympics but did not win a medal.  Later on in life Maze settled in Treyford, West Sussex and it was there in rural West Sussex that he concentrated on painting pastoral Landscapes scenes.

1952 Maze held his first one man exhibition at the Wildenstein Gallery in New York and that same year he went on to record the funeral of His Majesty King George VI.  He was subsequently selected as the official painter of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation the following year.

Hi died at the age of 92 with a pastel in his hand, overlooking his beloved South Downs in West Sussex in 1979.  In a 1989 speech by Churchills daughter, she said " Maze was a painting companion.  The 'Cher Maitre' as we all came to call this charming man, remained a regular visitior to Chartwell for many years.

Maze's art is often characterized by his ability to capture the fleeting moments of nature and the play of light, his focus on capturing the atmosphere and mood of the scene which he does so brilliantly in this Boat scene.

The Description de L'Egypt is a series of publications, appearing in 1809 and continuing until the final volume in 1829.  The book offeres a comprehensive scientific description of ancient Egypt as well as its natural history - seen here in these engravings.  It is the collaborative work of 160 civilian scholars and scientists who accompanied Napoleon's expedition to Egypt from 1798 to 1801, including 400 engravers who later compiled it into a full work.

Joan Miro 1893-1983 a Catalan artist.

As seen in this series his artworks were innovative, experimental and playful informing and inspiring the work of his Surrealist contemporaries, Alexander Calder, Salvador Dali to name a few.

Miro’s family urged him to have a career in finance so from the age of 14 he studied business and later became an accounting clerk. Unsurprisingly he did not enjoy it at all and after suffering a break down and rather harsh spell of typhoid he closed the book on his accounting life. In 1912 he officially started his artistic career enrolling in Gali’s Escola d’Art, Barcelona.

He was given his first solo show in 1918 in Barcelona, it was a disaster, nothing sold and critics and the public panned it later forcing him to leave Barcelona for Paris in 1920. In Paris Miro ignored the critics and in 1925 sold what he believed to be his first masterpiece ‘The Farm’ to writer Ernest Hemingway. It celebrated his Catalan heritage.

Known to have said ‘I want to assassinate painting’ from 1925 Miro experimented with different materials and mediums and found a particular dislike for Cubism. From 1944 Miro was experimenting with ceramics, sculptures, murals, lithography, etching and printing. He kept experimenting, pushing boundaries and in 1974 he was commissioned to create an enormous tapestry for the lobby of the S.Terminal of the World Trade Centre in New York.

It was after WWII that Miro’s fame went stratospheric, cementing his status as one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th Century. He created a ceramic mural for UNESCO building in Paris and was later awarded The Guggenheim International Award in 1958. Also awarded the Grand Prize for Graphic work at The Venice Biennale in 1954.

Miro was and still is immensely important in the development of abstract expressionism having an enormous influence on Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky and many many more artists we see today.

In 2012 a Miro ‘ Etoile Bleue’ sold for more than £23.5 million setting a new record for Miro.

Miro worked until he was 90 and was married to his wife Juncosa for 50 of those years having one daughter Maria. Surprisingly his personality was very much the opposite of his work as was his dress sense - he would always be seen in a dark almost black business suit and his life was full of discipline and order.

Published in Paris during 1958, this work reproduces the magnificent original Picasso drawings of 1946. Here Picasso utilized possibly for the first time the lithographic technique, reproduced here almost in monochrome to recreate the austere mythological interaction of the Centaur, the Nymph and the Faun, a constant theme in Picasso's post-war period. Briton Riviere belonged to a family of artists of Huguenot descent. At the time of his death, no fewer than nine of its members, spread over four generations, had exhibited at the Royal Academy. The youngest child of William Riviere (1806-1876), Briton was born in London but moved with his family to Cheltenham and then to Oxford, where amongst other things, he worked with his father on a commission to complete the Arthurian murals in the Union that D.G. Rossetti and his assistants had left incomplete in 1858. At the age of ten he exhibited his first pictures at the British Institution, and at eighteen he made his debut at the Academy. By 1876 was an associate of the Academy and by 1881 a full Academician.

Norman Lloyd 1895 - 1983

An Australian painter in 1930 he migrated to London to St Johns Wood. He established himself in London as well as hosting parties, his house became a meeting point for Australian expats but also London creatives including pianist Nancy Weir and war correspondent Harold Fyffe.

He was elected as a member for Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1936 and became a member of The London Sketch Club over which he provided from 1941-1942.

His style evokes impressionism, he was known for painting fast having a love for textural oils and pastels as seen here!

Loyds work is now shown in the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Queensland Art Gallery and numbers private collections in Australia, Europe and US.

Bryan Organ, born in Leicestershire in 1935 currently lives in London.

Between 1952 -1959 he studied at Loughborough College of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools.

He has held shows in London, New York, Italy and Germany and been represented by Redfern Gallery since 1967.  His pieces are in both public and private collections worldwide.

His most famous works have included portraits of:

HRH The Prince of Wales. 1981, Lady Diana Spencer, 1981, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, 1983, Mary Quant, 1963, HRH Princess Margaret, 1970, Elton John, 1973, Richard Attenborough, 1985, Allan Sugar, 2010

Gustave Colin, 1828 - 1910 French. Wild Flower Meadow.

Colin was an impressionist artists who was best known for his landscape and portrait paintings. Exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1857 he spent much of his life near Biarritz.

A pair of oils both signed by British born artist Deborah Jones. Jones had a huge following from Hollywoods A list including Cary Grant who bought every single piece in her 1973 solo show in London. Frank Sinatra was also a big collector.

David Spiller (born 1942) is a prolific artist who grew up during the establishment of post-war English Pop culture.

Since an early age he demonstrated interest for drawing, inspired by the cinema characters he liked most - Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck - and at the age of 16 he started a graphics course at Sidcup Art School. By the time he attended the Slade Art School in London during the 1960s, he witnessed the raise of British Pop Art, so he was naturally influenced by the art of its pioneers. However, being younger than most Pop artists Spiller developed a different approach and offered another comment on the new mass-market urban culture.

Jean Cassou. Au pont des arts, Paris 1966. Limited on 300 numbered copies.\Loose as issued, in beige cloth folder with brown corners and spine, and tie strings.  Printed on grand Veline de Rives paper. Six of ten lithographs are signed on the stone.

The portfolio present a collection of 10 lithographs in colour, reproducing 10 Picasso paintings, drawings and collages created between 1910 and 1914, which were donated to the Musee National d'Art Modern, in Paris, by Marie Cuttoli-Henri-Laugier.

Picasso collaborated actively with the production of the portfolio, and composed especially for this edition, a collage for the frontispiece.

These look fantastic as a set and can be framed by us.

At the time of publication, the Description de l'Égypte was the largest printed work ever produced. Its influence was enormous, establishing Egyptology as an intellectual discipline and nurturing a passion for Egyptian art throughout the Western World.

Ronald Ossory Dunlop  (1894 - 1973)

Born in Dublin, Ireland.  In 1950 he was elected to the Royal Academy.  Between 1940 and 1949 he exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy and in 1928 had his first one man show at the Redfern Gallery. There are public collections of his works at the Tate, London, V&A Museum, National Portrait Gallery, London.

Philip Connard RA 1875 - 1958

Connard was well recognised for his decorative landscapes and still Life’s (this being an impressive example). He started as an interior painter and part time studies at the Royal College of Art later gaining a scholarship and in 1898 won a British Institution Prize which took him over seas to Paris.

WWI Connard fought in France reaching to the rank of Captain before being invalided due to severe shell shock. He was then appointed an official War Artist (some can be seen at the Imperial War Museum).

Later he was a number of important decorative commissions such as murals at Windsor Castle and his work today can be seen at the Tate, Musee d’Orsay, National Gallery and The Royal Academy.

John Hitchens Born 1940

Lindy Guinness (also known as The Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava) had a remarkable training that included studying at The Slade with Oskar Kokoschka and painting with Duncan Grant.  Based in Ireland where she has a large studio, she has worked with a number of other Irish artists and has had a series of solo exhibitions in London, Paris and most recently in Italy at The Castello di Reschio.

Paul Lucien Maze (1887-1979)

Born in France but educated in England, attach to the Royal Scots Greys in WWI and served Britain in WWII. In face nearly all of his paintings including this one typified all things British.

He was appointed official painter of Queen Elizabeth II coronation and was famously known as ‘the last of the post impressionists’.
